It’s been 18 months since the launch of Apple’s iPhone App Store, and since then we’ve had Google’s Android apps, Nokia’s Ovi apps and Windows Mobile apps, but none of these latter options are yet to reach the sheer choice available on their older rival’s platform. Apps have changed mobile phones from simple call/text functionality to powerful portable tool kits with solutions to a huge amount of needs. There are now 150,000 apps available from Apple, but as yet there’s no easy way to get through the App Store and find what you want unless you know exactly what you are looking for. However, help is at hand, and here’s a quick guide to five of the best apps currently available in the Apple App Store. If you would like to get an iPhone, then take a look at the Vodafone website where you can now find the latest 32 GB 3GS model.
Spotify – Music

There are quite a few different music streaming services available through the App Store, with Pandora and Last.fm regularly being touted as amongst the best. However, few have been quite so hyped as Spotify, which was anticipated as a ‘killer app’ before its launched. This streaming service allows you to search for and play any music from the service’s catalogue, edit your playlists, create new ones, which will sync back to the desktop, and save music to your phone to listen to offline. One slight drawback is that it’s for Spotify’s premium users only, so it costs £9.99, making it amongst the most expensive apps.

FlightTrack – Travel

A handy app is great for travel and business and perfect for frequent flyers. You email your travel plans to TripIt, which organizes a master itinerary which you can then view through the FlightTrack app on your iPhone. It’s smart enough to calculate complications and possible delays based on the weather, while giving you access to airport delays and closures, flight statuses and gate changes. It can even help you find another flight if yours gets canceled.

RunKeeper – Health and Fitness

Certainly one for fitness fanatics, RunKeeper tracks your outdoor runs and performance using the phone’s GPS tracking system. You can check the amount of calories burned, distance traveled, duration, pace and altitude, and it can even trace your path on a map. Because your jogs are stored, you can monitor your progress and see where you need to improve. If you’re more of a treadmill runner, then RunTrack can still monitor your fitness stats without the GPS.

Photoshop.com Mobile – Photography

With a wide selection of apps dedicated to photography, Adobe’s king of photo editing stands out from the crowd. It allows you to flip or crop images, and add effects and filters. You can store, edit and share photos from wherever you are. The iPhones camera might not be the best on the market, particularly in poor light, but this handy app can certainly give those snaps are brush up.

Music and phones have had a happy marriage for quite some time now, but the latest generation of smart phones has seen storage and media players being taken to the next level. Many handset providers are now making serious waves in the music industry with the release of their own music stores. Of course, Apple has iTunes, but then there’s the Nokia Music Store along with other provider releases. If you’re looking to merge your iPod and phone handset into one device, then it’s now entirely possible to do that with the huge size of a phone’s memory. If you want to find a great music playing handset, then here are three of the best.
Nokia x6

This phone has either 16GB or 32GB of hard disk space, which is room for 5,500 or 11,000 tracks respectively. The larger model can have the Nokia ‘Come with Music’ feature, which means you won’t have to spend as much time transferring data onto your phone. The phone’s battery can endure a very long 18 days of standby time, 11.5 hours of talk time and 35 hours of music playback! That’s enough time to listen to around 6% of the phones entire disk space. Further features of this handset are a 5 megapixel camera with duel LED flash, applications and pre loaded games including Spore by EA, Asphalt4 and DJ Mix Tour. If you would like to find out more about the Nokia X6, then take a look at the Vodafone website where you can currently pre order one.
Sony Ericsson Satio

Sony Ericsson has been the leading mobile phone manufacturer in camera phone and multimedia technology for a while now, but it decided to combine the Cybershot and Walkman phones together for the Satio. For all its gadgetry, it’s a particularly light phone, which makes it ideal for listening to music if you go for a jog. While it only comes with an initial 8GB of storage, it’s possible to upgrade to 32GB by getting another card. Along with its excellent camera and music capabilities, this smart phone also has 340 hours standby battery life, a 3.5 inch touchscreen and Wi-FI as standard.
HTC HD2

One of the larger smart phones available, the HTC HD2 comes with a 4.3 TFT resistive touchscreen and a powerful battery, while weighing in at 157 grams. It comes with 16 GB of storage space built in, but users can upgrade to 32 GB if they choose. Naturally, the HD2 has mobile broadband (7.2 Mbps HSDPA), plus it includes Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth 2.1. It is even be able to act as a Wi-Fi router for another computer. It also includes a 5 MPx camera with auto-focus, a microSD card reader, GPS receiver, 1,230 mAh battery, and a 3.5 mm headset jack. This HTC device comes with Windows Mobile’s standard collection of mobile apps: Outlook Office, Media Player. Opera Mobile is the default web browser. The multimedia player is capable of playing MP3, WAV, WMA, eAAC+, AVI(DiVX/XviD), MP4, WMV, H.264 and H.263 formats.

When the HTC Magic was released, a lot of people immediately compared it to the iPhone. With its looks and features, this was pretty much predictable. But how does the HTC Magic compare to the iPhone? Is it better? Will it finally topple over iPhone’s reign as leader of the smartphones?

At first look, one will see that the HTC Magic is well-designed. It is definitely better-looking than the T-Mobile G1, the only other android phone available in the UK. Unlike the G1, the HTC Magic does not have a slide-out keyboard. This makes the device more compact and a whole lot lighter. Obviously, the touchscreen is a little bit smaller, too, and this can be a problem for some people. Right below the screen are buttons for navigating the device. There is a trackball that proves to be useless as you can navigate the menu through the touchscreen. When it comes to inputting text, you have to use the on-screen virtual keyboard. This takes some getting used to and some might say that a real slide-out keyboard would have been better, but if you have an Unlimited Texts contract I am sure you will still text the best as the HTC Magic’s responsive screen makes typing so much easier. The vibrate feedback is also a great help. Another good aspect is the accelerometer, which allows you to change from vertical to horizontal orientation. This is especially helpful when you’re viewing web pages.

The aspect where more work should have been done is the camera. The HTC Magic has a 3.2 MP camera that has no flash or micro mirror. This means that the chance of you getting nice shots in low light is slim to none. Photo and video quality is not very impressive. Having said this, in normal light the camera is adequate.

Generally, the HTC Magic is better than the G1. If you are into android phones and you already have the G1, we recommend getting an upgrade by purchasing an HTC Magic. It may not be as nice as an iPhone but this HTC Mobile is still a great device.
